About Us
The Friends of Delapre Abbey (FoDA) is a charity and limited company. It is a non-political organisation. FoDA was established in June 2001 to protest against plans to lease the historic Delapré Abbey (founded 1145) to a developer and the possible loss of this valuable and much loved community resource. The resulting campaign to ‘Save our Abbey’ generated much public interest from as far a field as Australia and resulted in FoDA gaining an initial membership of some 1600 people opposed to selling the Abbey.
Following the success of this initial campaign FoDA has comtinued to help protect, preserve & restore the Abbey, including the walled garden, park and lake. What began as a local protest group in 2001 was recognised by the Charity Commission in 2006 and granted Registered Charity status (number 1113979).
Today the Friends of Delapré Abbey is a volunteer organisation which acts as both a supportive and critical friend to Northampton Borough Council and the Delapre Abbey Preservation Trust, ensuring community views inform the development of the Abbey and its visitor offer, and supporting community volunteering involvement at the site. The Friends of Delapre Abbey take part in, and organise, a variety of community activities. We know Delapre Abbey is special to a lot of people and we welcome new members at any time from the local and wider community.
We are working closely with Northampton Borough Council and the Delapré Abbey Preservation Trust to safeguard the future of Delapré Abbey.
Together we aim to celebrate the historical and architectural significance of Delapré, establishing it as an important and inspiring community heritage asset.
